San Francisco 49ers (+1600 to win Super Bowl,BetMGM)
2021 record: 10-7, 3rd in NFC West
Despite being underdogs in every playoff game last season, the 49ers nearly made it to the Super Bowl. Now, they will look to build upon last season’s surprise success with a new starting quarterback, Trey Lance.
That hope for improvement will need to be boosted by the players already on this roster because the Niners mostly were capped out in terms of maneuverability on the free-agent market. The 49ers lost three high-performing starters to free agency: left guard Laken Tomlinson, nose tackle D.J. Jones, and cornerback K’Waun Williams.
Although, with some better health luck — and perhaps stronger quarterback play — the 49ers could again be top contenders to hoist the Lombardy Trophy this fall.

NFL betting lines: 49ers win total
O/U 10.0 wins (Caesars)
As the season draws near, Caesars projects the 49ers will be a borderline playoff team and get precisely 10 wins. A lot of that hope will rest on the shoulders of their new starter Lance.
Lance is the most unproven top-three draft pick we have seen. He had one impressive season at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State, rushing for 1,100 yards and throwing 28 touchdowns passes with zero interceptions. Those numbers are gaudy, but the level of competition was weak.
Last season, we saw very little from the then-21-year-old rookie. What we do know is that Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be traded or cut before his contract becomes guaranteed. Oddly enough, Lance is the most bet-on player to win the NFL MVP award.
Those bettors are hoping Lance jumps into stardom — a la Patrick Mahomes — after a season of learning the offense from the bench. A potential cause for concern for Lance and the rest of the offense is the loss of Tomlinson, their starting left guard, and Tom Compton, their right tackle.
Nick Bosa Getty ImagesPro Football Focus expects the 49ers’ line to rank in the mid-tier (14th), which is a far cry from their No. 3 ranking last season. Moreover, Sean Koerner of the Action Network ranks their schedule as the 15th easiest in the NFL.
This is quite surprising, considering the 49ers are in one of the most challenging divisions. If you can get the 49ers total at 9.5, the Over is going to be the play there. At 10, the total is a pass considering 10 wins is a push.
Surely they could win 11 games, but that is not worth a preseason bet, especially having to face most of the AFC West early on.

Expert best bets, futures, and props
Middle: Trey Lance ‘Over’ 574.5 rushing yards -115 (BetMGM) | ‘Under’ 640.5 rushing yards -115 (Caesars)
No, Lance, to win the MVP is not a good bet. Instead, let’s look at his rushing background, which we know is extensive.
At North Dakota State, Lance ran for 14 touchdowns and 1,100 yards in his lone full season as the starter. Last season with San Francisco, Lance was given a ton of opportunity to run. He averaged 6.33 attempts per game in just three starts over six games. He also had 18 carries in one game, tied for the second-most by a quarterback in the NFL last year.
The quarterbacks who surpassed that marker last season were Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts. On average, about three quarterbacks surpass 574.5 rushing yards in a season.
Trey Lance showing off his wheels as a running threat. Getty ImagesFor sharp bettors who have access to both BetMGM and Caesars, this is an excellent spot to middle your bet. BetMGM has Lance’s rushing prop set at 574.5, and Caesars has its projection set at 640.5. If you were to bet Over 574.5 and Under 640.5, you would win both bets if the final number ends up landing in between those two numbers, which appears likely; those 66 yards are valuable.
Obviously, your risk is extremely mitigated here, as you’re essentially breaking even if only one bet wins.
