Because of its spot on the calendar — it takes place a week before the Open Championship — the Scottish Open always ends up as one of the most popular DP World Tour events of the season.

Plenty of PGA Tour stars make the trek to the Renaissance Club, just 20 minutes outside of Edinburgh, to get adjusted to links-style golf and the conditions that they’ll face at the Open. 

The presence of these PGA Tour stars — Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, and defending champion Xander Schauffele are among the favorites this week — makes the Scottish Open a fun tournament to handicap.

While you need to respect the PGA invaders because they’re typically stronger players compared to those who play on the DP World Tour, it’s also the first time they’ll be facing these kinds of conditions in quite a while. 

And since most casual bettors will flock to familiar names at the top of the board, savvy punters can find value on players who are more comfortable playing links golf.

Two players who fit that bill are Robert MacIntyre and Thomas Detry.

MacIntyre, a native of Scotland, has two top-20 finishes in four trips to the Renaissance Club, and is coming off a T4 result in Denmark last week.

Detry has spent most of the year playing on the PGA Tour, but he’s clearly comfortable in this setting.

The Belgian was the runner-up at the 2021 Scottish Open and was 10th here in 2022.
