The Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks face off in NFL preseason action on Thursday. Seattle lost to the Steelers in its preseason opener, while Chicago defeated the Chiefs.
The question in Seattle is who will replace Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback for the 2022 season? The battle between Geno Smith and Drew Lock tightened after the preseason opener. Smith went 10-for-15 for 101 yards, while Lock completed 11 of 15 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Lock, however, has tested positive for COVID-19 and won’t play on Thursday, moving the line from Seattle -5 to -3.5 shortly after the news broke.

Justin Fields is locked in as the Bears’ starter. He didn’t play long in the opener, completing 4 of 7 passes for 48 yards. Chicago does have two veterans behind Fields: Trevor Siemian and Nathan Peterman.
Geno Smith drops back to pass. Getty ImagesThe loss of Lock means Smith likely will play most of the first half. The Seahawks have only two healthy quarterbacks on the roster, so look for Seattle’s starters to log a lot of minutes in the first two quarters before backup Jacob Eason takes over.

I planned on backing Seattle before the Lock news and I’m still going that way. Smith has a chance to put some distance between himself and Lock and I think Seattle will build on its offensive performance last week (25 points, 339 yards) to cover the short number at home.
