The Braves and Marlins have seen a lot of their young starting pitchers take a quantum leap forward this season, and each will have one on display Sunday (1:10 p.m.).
Miami’s Pablo Lopez has been issuing just 2.3 walks per nine innings. Since a shelling from the Mets on May 10, when he allowed 10 runs in three innings, Lopez has been solid. Minus that start, his ERA is a 3.26. He has given up zero or one run in three of his past four starts, with the Marlins winning his three quality starts.
Atlanta’s Max Fried has been giving up more runs recently — but that isn’t hard after he posted a 2.11 ERA through six starts. For the year, he is 7-3 with a 3.68 ERA and is walking 2.5 batters per nine innings.
Through the first six games of June, the Marlins posted the most runs of any team in baseball, though they still entered the weekend tied with the Tigers for last place in runs per game scored. The Braves were No. 2 in terms of most runs scored in June, but were in the bottom half of the league in runs per game in May.
Miami has a pitcher-friendly ballpark and each team is sending out one of its better starters, so regression should set in for these offenses and lead to a lower scoring game.
