Going into the season, few would have called a matchup between the Phillies’ Zach Eflin and the Brewers’ Zach Davies a must-see pitching matchup, but both rank in the top 12 in MLB in ERA for starting pitchers and have gotten off to terrific starts.

Among qualified starters, Davies has the league’s best ERA at 1.54 despite averaging just under six strikeouts per nine innings. He’s done well with limiting hard contact, surrendering three home runs in 46 ²/₃ innings.

Eflin is registering just 6.7 strikeouts per nine innings, but getting early strikes and not going deep into counts has been highly successful for him. He has tossed two complete games in the past 18 days and has given up only seven home runs in 51 innings.

Both pitchers are backed up by bullpens that rank in the top half of the MLB in ERA that have been improving of late. Entering Wednesday, seven of the Phillies last 10 games had gone Under the total, while the Brewers played nine of their last 11 Under.

While each team has a star slugger, Christian Yelich for Milwaukee and Rhys Hoskins for Philadelphia, neither team has gotten consistent production from the rest of the lineup as both teams having batting averages that rank 15th and 16th in the league, respectively.
