Though the Mariners have been MLB’s best team to play their game totals Over, it appears their record is regressing.
Plus the Cardinals, their opponent Tuesday night, couldn’t get their offense going in June. St. Louis averaged the second-fewest runs per game in the month of June with 3.3 per contest. The Cards are without top slugger Marcell Ozuna, who was averaging a home run every 14.7 at-bats before he went on the injured list with a finger injury.
Though the Mariners have played 67.1 percent of their games over the total this season, four of their past five games have gone under, and the team’s roster has changed. Jay Bruce and Edwin Encarnacion, who hit a combined 35 home runs with the Mariners this season, were traded in recent weeks.
The Mariners will be starting Matt Carasiti, the team’s one successful opener. In the two games he has opened, he has not allowed a run while all other Mariners openers have allowed two or more runs in five of their seven games.
With both teams being in the bottom 10 in batting average in June and the Cardinals dead last in that regard, it makes it difficult for the big hit to count. Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty is allowing 1.9 home runs per nine innings, but giving up solo home runs will not push the total over in this evolving game, and he is backed up by a bullpen that is eighth in the MLB in ERA.
With both teams cooling off offensively and their pitching showing improvement, it presents a lot of value to taking the total under.
