The St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies enter their series in the top 10 in MLB in runs per game with both plating over 5.1 runs per game.
Many remember Aaron Nola from his great season last year, going 17-6 with a 2.37 ERA with a WHIP less than one. The problem is, he has not been the same player this season despite his record saying 2-0.
Through seven starts this season, Nola is giving up a full home run more per nine innings with his ERA at 5.06 and WHIP of 1.607. His walks per nine innings also has went from 2.5 in 2018 to 3.9 in 2019.
He is being opposed by Dakota Hudson of the Cardinals, who has certainly not been lights out himself. Hudson is lucky to not have his ERA higher than 4.80 as his WHIP is a 1.733 and he is giving up 2.4 home runs per nine innings. He has not gone past six innings in a single start this season and is backed by a bullpen with a 3.96 ERA, which has led to the Cardinals playing 18 of their first 32 games over the total.
With a pair of pitchers that have been allowing a bunch of men to reach base this year coupled with two good offenses, this is a solid spot to look at an over and see an exciting high-scoring affair.
The Play: Cardinals-Phillies, Over 8¹/₂ runs.
