Our NFL betting writer offers his best betting picks and predictions for the matchup between the Chiefs and Broncos scheduled in Denver for Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET on CBS.

Kansas City has dominated this series with 13 straight victories over the Broncos, and it’s hard to see Denver’s pop-gun offense keeping up with the Chiefs’ potent attack.

Chiefs vs. Broncos predictions and analysis

Patrick Mahomes against the Denver version of Russell Wilson is a complete mismatch. While the Chiefs lead the NFL in scoring offense at 29.2 points per game, the Broncos are dead last at 13.8 and struggle to score opposing defenses.

Chiefs -9.5

Kansas City is in the middle of a three-game road trip, and the club will be looking to avoid its first two-game slide of the season. The Chiefs were outplayed by the Cincinnati Bengals for the third time in 11-plus months last week when they lost 27-24 to the defending AFC champions.

Kansas City is moving closer to clinching the AFC West, and Mahomes is a stellar 14-0 in AFC West road games. Plus, the Chiefs haven’t lost in the Mile High City since 2014, when Peyton Manning was Denver’s quarterback.

Mahomes injured his foot on the last offensive play of the game versus Cincinnati but it isn’t expected to deter him from playing. It may limit how often he attempts to scramble out of the pocket but he can probably still make plays with his arm against the Broncos without the threat of running.

Kansas City has scored 30 or more points on five occasions this season, while Denver has scored more than 20 points just twice. No matter how good the Broncos’ defense might be, going with the Chiefs and giving up the points is an easy call.

Pick: Chiefs to cover -9.5 spread

Under 44 total points

Wilson was supposed to be a difference-maker for Denver when he was acquired from the Seattle Seahawks but has bumbled through an abysmal season. He has not been a good fit in the offense of first-year coach Nathaniel Hackett and the squad has scored 11 or fewer points on six occasions.

Wilson has thrown just eight touchdown passes and has been held to under 200 yards four times, including each of the last two games. Denver has scored 10 or fewer points in three of the past four games.

The sad aspect is that the Broncos have been superb on the defensive side while the offense habitually struggles. Denver ranks second in scoring defense (17.0 points per game) and third in total defense (304.6) and has lost eight games by single digits due to the offensive ineptness.

The Broncos figure to do all they can to slow Mahomes and crew but there is no sign of Wilson suddenly breaking out. But count on Denver’s ability to play low-scoring games coming into play and assuring the total goes under.

Pick: Under 44 total points to be scored
