Two teams that are starving for a World Series championship will hook up for Game 1 on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas, as the Tampa Bay Rays look for the franchise’s first title while the Dodgers haven’t lifted the trophy since 1988.
The Rays will give the ball to Tyler Glasnow, who has been terrific at getting swings and misses with 13.4 strikeouts per nine innings, but also has been prone to giving up the deep ball, allowing two home runs per nine innings.
He has the task of going up against a Dodgers team that already has played two series in Arlington, giving the hitters an idea of the dimensions of the ballpark. The Dodgers led the majors in both runs and home runs in the 60-game regular season and have scored at least three runs in 20 of their last 22 games.
Glasnow will face Clayton Kershaw, whose career playoff ERA is more than a point and a half-point higher than during the regular season and has ballooned even more in the World Series. He has a lifetime ERA of 5.40 across five total appearances, four of them starts, in the Fall Classic including five home runs surrendered across 26 ²/₃ innings.
Though the Rays batters struck out the most of any team in the majors in the regular season, they’ve made it count when they have made contact and are fresh off of scoring at least three runs in all seven games of their series against the Houston Astros.
The roof at Globe Life Field will be open with fans in the stands, so the ball figures to carry a bit more. That has led to a trend of 10 of the last 14 games including Texas Rangers home games and the National League playoffs going over the total, and that figures to continue on Tuesday.
The Play: Rays-Dodgers Game 1 total, Over 8 runs (-115).
