Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish are gone to the NBA, leaving Coach K without a Final Four to show for all of last season’s hype. Mike Krzyzewski wins when he has more talent than the other coach, which might not be the case when Duke clashes with Kansas on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.
The Blue Devils are reloaded, led by sophomore point guard Tre Jones and newcomers Cassius Stanley, Wendell Moore, Matthew Hurt and Vernon Carey. Inexperience is an obvious issue, but Duke appears to have a bigger problem. One of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the nation last season, the Blue Devils still lack perimeter firepower. The NCAA has extended the 3-point line to the international distance of 22 feet, 1¾ inches, and the longer shot will hinder mediocre shooters.
The Jayhawks’ Devon Dotson is a big-time point guard who almost bolted for the NBA after an outstanding freshman year. Udoka Azubuike is a 7-foot, 270-pound scorer and rim protector. Marcus Garrett, Ochai Agbaji and Silvio De Sousa round out a potent starting lineup for coach Bill Self.
Preseason power ratings involve some guesswork, but I rate Kansas 1½ points better than Duke, which opened as the favorite.
The play: Kansas, +1½.
