The New York Giants and New England Patriots kick off their 2022 NFL preseasons on Thursday night with the G-Men installed as a slight road favorite, and the total at 33.5.
You don’t want to overreact to practices, but so far the Giants’ defense has looked good. The offense … not so much. I’m not surprised though. I believe the Giants’ defense will be the most improved unit in the NFL this season.

Giants vs. Patriots prediction
Two years ago, the Giants ranked ninth in total defense. Last year, they dropped to 21st. But that’s misleading because the offense was so inept. Look for their defense this season to be closer to the 2020 version.
At quarterback, backup Tyrod Taylor and third-stringer Davis Webb will see the majority of time under center for the Giants. That might not be a bad thing, since both guys have looked better than starter Daniel Jones in camp.
Tyrod Taylor drops back to pass in Giants camp. Getty ImagesThe Patriots also have a veteran backup in Brian Hoyer, who is expected to get work after missing practice time due to an illness.
It will be Hoyer and rookie Bailey Zappe getting most of the snaps for New England. Zappe could end up being a Patriots preseason hero.

There’s a misconception that Bill Belichick doesn’t care about the preseason. He’s 8-3 against the spread in his last 11 games. This line has moved toward the Giants, but I’m going the other way and grabbing the Patriots as small home dogs.
