The 149th Kentucky Derby is tonight at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
And like any outdoor sporting event, the weather will play a factor.
After rainy conditions yesterday, there is only a slight chance of rain Saturday, according to The Weather Channel.
2023 Kentucky Derby forecast
The forecast for this year’s Run for the Roses calls for overcast skies but warm, mid-70s-ish weather this afternoon.
Showers are possible this morning and early afternoon, but they aren’t expected to impact the race.
2022 Kentucky Derby Getty ImagesWes Peterson, a spokesman for Ocala Breeders, told FOX Weather last year that rainy, cold weather has the biggest impact on race horses.
“Every horse is different and depends on a case-by-case scenario, but jockeys sometimes change horses’ hooves on Derby day to accommodate the cold, rain, or muddy track,” Peterson said. “It is a game-time decision, if you will, as the weather can change in a hurry.”
Today’s weather will be a bit warmer than the average high temperature on Derby Day, which is around 70 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
The average low temperature is roughly 60 degrees.
After fears of rain earlier this week, horse racing lovers are happy to avoid a repeat of the 2018 Kentucky Derby, when more than three inches of rain fell, leaving a sloppy track behind.
The Kentucky Derby post time is 6:57 p.m. Eastern and you can watch it on NBC.
