Sovereignty is the 2025 Kentucky Derby Champion. Ridden by Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty went off with odds of 7-1.

The exacta, which requires bettors to correctly pick the first and second-place horses, paid out $48.32 on a $2 punt. Journalism, the 3-1 favorite, finished second.

The trifecta, which only wins if you correctly pick the horses that finish first, second, and third, paid out $115.56 on a $0.50 wager. No. 21 Baeza, who was an also-eligible, finished third.

The superfecta, which goes one step further and requires you to correctly pick the horses who finished first, second, third, and fourth, paid out $1,682.27 on a $1 bet. No. 3 Final Gambit finished fourth.

Sovereignty, who went off with 7-1 odds, won the 2025 Kentucky Derby.

No. 8 Journalism, the 3-1 favorite, finished second, just ahead of No. 21 Baeza and No. 3 Final Gambit.

Sovereignty was the third-favorite at the start of the race.

As expected, No. 8 Journalism continues to take money as we get closer to post time for the 2025 Kentucky Derby.

After being installed as the 3-1 favorite on the morning line, Journalism's price drifted a touch to 4-1 during the week.

Those odds held for most of Derby Day, but money has piled in on the favorite and caused his price to come down to 7-2.

No. 17 Sandman (5-1) remains the second-favorite, just ahead of No. 7 Luxor Cafe (8-1), and No. 18 Sovereignty (9-1).

The 2025 Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday, May 3, at Churchill Downs in Louisville. 

No. 8 Journalism (7-2) is the clear favorite and will almost certainly go off as the chalk when it comes time to sound the bugle on Saturday evening. 

Not only is Journalism coming into the Run for the Roses on a four-race winning streak at three different tracks culminating with the Santa Anita Derby on April 5, but he also drew well in the No. 8 post position. 

It’s tough to poke holes in Journalism’s résumé, but this is a 20-horse field featuring the best 3-year-olds in the world. There is always the potential for chaos with this setup.

One way to take advantage of the expected chaos is to build a handful of exotics (exactas, trifectas, and superfectas) with long shots.

Not only is the Kentucky Derby one of the best sporting events on the calendar, but it’s also an incredible betting opportunity.

The last six Kentucky Derby winners (including Medina Spirit who was disqualified months after winning the 2021 iteration of the race) have gone off with average odds of 33/1 and two of the champions, Country House and Rich Strike, boasted post-time odds over 60/1.

Last year’s winner, Mystik Dan, took home the prize at an unfancied price of 18/1, giving us a third winner in as many years above 15/1.

We are just about 100 minutes away from the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby and No. 8 Journalism is holding as the favorite.

After being installed as the 3-1 chalk on the morning line, Journalism's odds have drifted a tad to 4-1, but he remains at the top of the board as we get closer to post-time.

No. 17 Sandman (5-1) and No. 7 Luxor Cafe (8-1) are the only other horses with single-digit odds.

One price to keep an eye on is No. 21 Baeza (17-1), an also-eligible who drew into the field after two horses scratched during the week.

There are plenty of savvy horseplayers who believe that Baeza is a threat to not only outrun his long odds but win the race outright.
