LeBron James’ future in Los Angeles could be coming to an end.
After a second straight playoff elimination at the hands of the Denver Nuggets, the NBA legend’s Lakers tenure is in question.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported Tuesday that James could test free agency rather than opt into his $51 million deal for the 2024-25 season with the Lakers, sparking chatter about where he may take his talents next.
It’ll be yet another drama-filled summer in the NBA with James at the center looming, oddsmakers at FanDuel Sportsbook & Casino Canada think the four-time MVP is likely but far from a shoo-in to remain in purple and gold next season.
The Lakers are a +150 favorite to have James on their roster come opening night in October, but they are much less likely to retain the future Hall of Famer than they were a year ago.
After Los Angeles’ Monday night loss to Denver, the Athletic reported that the Lakers wanted James back “badly” and were open to a potential three-year, $164 million max extension with James this summer.
But James could ultimately bolt from Hollywood, and dozens of teams would surely line up for his services even as he approaches the age of 40.
The New York Knicks (+950) have emerged as the early favorites should James leave Los Angeles.

A homecoming with either the Cleveland Cavaliers (+1100) or Miami Heat (+1100) is also on the table, according to FanDuel oddsmakers.

Both teams are a piece away from becoming true title contenders. A James return to either city would be one of the biggest NBA storylines in recent league history.
The Golden State Warriors (+1300), who reportedly tried to acquire James at the February trade deadline, are also looming as a potential destination.
