Maryland and Michigan State have been two of the most profitable Power Five teams in recent weeks. The Spartans have covered seven games in a row while Maryland is 5-1-1 against the spread in its past seven.
Though Maryland may not quite have the fire power and pedigree of the Tom Izzo-led Spartans, what they are getting is points, and quite a few of them.
Few low-post players in the country can match up with Michigan State’s Nick Ward, but Bruno Fernando is one of them. He is averaging a double-double for the season and in nine of the team’s past 10 games, he has shot 50 percent or better from the floor.
A big reason for his dominance is the way Maryland shoots from 3-point range. The Terps are 51st in the country in overall 3-point shooting percentage, but have actually shot from beyond the arc better away from College Park, making 37.7 percent of their 3-pointers in road and neutral-site games, which ranks 34th nationally.
The respect paid to the outside shooters gives Fernando a chance to work down low and with another big man in Jalen Smith helping the cause, Maryland ranks second in the country in overall rebound rate. That is typically a big advantage the Spartans have as they are third among Division I teams in that category.
And though Michigan State has been covering, Kyle Ahrens and Joshua Langford have both missed Michigan State’s most recent pair of games and may not be able to play Monday night. For a Maryland bunch that normally plays an eight-man rotation, that gives them a nice edge in being able to withstand a tough home environment and keep this game close.
The play: Maryland, +9 ¹/₂
