The Nationals and Dodgers send a pair of high-profile pitchers — Max Scherzer and Walker Buehler, respectively — to the mound Saturday. Their past success has led to a very low total, which may not be warranted given the way things have gone for them this season.

Scherzer is putting up tremendous individual numbers, but is being let down by his team. He has a fielding independent (a metric gauging what a pitcher’s ERA would be with fielding on balls in play that ranks at the league average) of 1.95. That is the best in the majors, but his true ERA is 3.78 and he has a 1-4 record thanks to poor fielding and a dead-last bullpen.

Buehler, meanwhile, has received a lot more support, but has not been the stellar pitcher he was a season ago. Despite a 4-0 record, his WAR is -0.2 as he going just over five innings per start and has a 4.95 ERA.

The play: Dodgers-Nationals, Over 7 runs.
