Vegas is expecting a slugfest in Mexico City.

Playing at sky-high elevation, the ball should be flying this weekend when the Padres and Diamondbacks square off south of the border.

In Saturday’s game, oddsmakers at most major sportsbooks have set the over/under at 15.5 runs (FanDuel Sportsbook), easily the highest total of the young season.

And for good reason, given recent history.

In each of the first two times Major League Baseball has played at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in Mexico City — which sits at roughly 7,320 feet above sea level, more than 2,000 feet higher in the elevation of Coors Field in Denver, the best hitter’s park in baseball — runs have come in bunches.

The park’s small dimensions also play a major role in its hitter-friendly reputation.

The left- and right-field lines sit just 332 feet from home plate, making them especially inviting in the thin air.

In the inaugural two-game set in 2023 between the Giants and Padres, the teams combined for 37 runs and 15 home runs.

The venue did not play quite as much like a bandbox a year later, but scoring was still high, as the Astros swept the Rockies in two games by scores of 12-4 and 8-2.

The elevation doesn’t just help the ball carry.

It also makes life miserable for pitchers, who often struggle to command their stuff while seeing their breaking balls flatten out.

A pair of right-handers — Germán Márquez for the Padres (2-1, 3.86 ERA) and Zac Gallen (1-1, 3.51) for the Diamondbacks — are the unfortunate starters set to take the mound Saturday.

On Sunday, San Diego’s Michael King and Arizona’s Ryne Nelson will try their best to keep the runs in check.
