If you’re a fan of old-school Big 12 shoot-outs, you’ll want to plan your afternoon around the fireworks show Saturday between the slumping Oklahoma Sooners and surging Kansas Jayhawks in what should be one of the highest-scoring games of the weekend.

Oklahoma’s defense has been a disaster in Year 1 under new coach Brent Venables, who hasn’t been able to translate his coaching brilliance as an assistant at Clemson into his first stint as a head coach. The Sooners have allowed a stunning 48.3 points per game over the last three weeks, capped off by last week’s humiliating 49-0 loss to rival Texas.

Kansas’ offense has been making opposing defenses look silly all year long, averaging 36.6 points per contest against FBS competition — the 19th-best mark in the country. And even after Heisman Trophy dark horse Jalon Daniels (shoulder) was knocked out of the loss to TCU last week, backup Jason Bean threw for 262 yards and four touchdowns in relief. This offense should be just fine.

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel (concussion) also missed time last week, but he’s expected to return on Saturday to spark a unit averaging 40.3 points in his four full contests as a starter. Conversely, this Jayhawks defense ranks 79th in the nation in points allowed (29.6) — just behind the 77th-ranked Sooners (29.2) — and has allowed 27 or more in four of five games vs. FBS foes. This should be a wild one.
