On Thursday, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario took the massive step of shutting down all wagering on MMA contests.
This stunning decisions comes weeks after an investigation was launched due to suspicious betting patterns in the UFC’s Darrick Minner vs. Shayilan Nuerdanbieke fight on Nov. 5.
“In order to protect the betting public, effective immediately, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is requiring all registered casino, lottery, and iGaming operators that offer sport and event betting products in Ontario to stop offering and accepting wagers on Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events due to concerns about non-compliance with AGCO’s betting integrity requirements,” the AGCO said in a statement.

The statement continues that the UFC does not offer safeguards against odds fixing and that they, “at a minimum… enforce codes of conduct that include prohibitions on betting by insiders.”
Minner, clearly dealing with a preexisting knee injury, lost quickly in the first round. There were plenty of wagers coming in on Nuerdanbieke, including to win by first-round TKO — a method of victory he hadn’t completed successfully since January 2020 (nine fights) and never in the UFC.
James Krause, Minner’s coach, has become the face of AGCO investigation. The retired MMA fighter ran a betting Discord channel called “The 1% Club,” where he gave MMA betting picks and, in some cases, bet on fights himself – even ones he was directly involved in.

It is unclear if the drastic measure by Ontario will be piggybacked by other legal sports betting states.
Requests for comment to The Post from Krause and the UFC have not been returned as of publish.
