The San Diego Padres pitching staff has been decimated to the point at which Jake Arrieta, whose teams (the Cubs and now the Padres) have lost 11 straight times in his starts, will get another start on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Arrieta has given up at least three runs in 13 of his past 16 starts. In his last 13 starts, he has a 9.89 ERA with 15 home runs and a .370 opponents batting average across 47 ¹/₃ innings.
Cardinals starter J.A. Happ is a fellow struggling veteran. In his past 22 starts, he owns a 7.06 ERA, has surrendered 2.2 home runs per nine innings and has allowed at least two home runs in nine of his past 18 starts.
The Padres entered the weekend with a 5.19 bullpen ERA the past 30 days, which is 27th in the MLB in this span. That’s a far cry from the form the Padres had to begin the season, when they led the league in bullpen ERA entering August.
The Cardinals entered the weekend having scored at least seven runs in four straight games and the Padres were 10th in the league in on-base percentage, so lots of runs are on tap in St. Louis on Sunday.
The play: Padres-Cardinals total, Over nine runs.
