Penn State vs. Michigan picks and analysis

Traditional Big Ten powerhouses and two of the 15 remaining undefeated FBS teams crash in an early test of title-worthiness.

It marks the first time since 1997 that both the fifth-ranked Wolverines and 10th-ranked Nittany Lions are in the top 10 for a head-to-head meeting.

Michigan running back Blake Corum could be a Heisman contender on the rise with a big game Saturday. Wolverines’ quarterback J.J. McCarthy had his best statistical outing since being named the starter after the second game of the season. He passed for a career-best 304 yards and three touchdowns, two to Cornelius Johnson.

But it’s the Jim Harbaugh Way to grit teeth and pound the rock in a game with a lot at stake. Corum had 124 yards last week in a tuneup and could see the ball 25-plus times if the game script allows for Harbaugh to stay conservative into the second half.

Our Pick: Michigan RB Blake Corum over 90 rushing yards

Sean Clifford anytime TD (+280)

Penn State lost 21-17 in the 2021 meeting with Michigan and Clifford’s pass protection didn’t do him many favors. But he did scramble for 45 rushing yards and isn’t afraid to run to the sticks to keep drives moving.

Clifford will be on the move — sometimes by design, sometimes in the name of self-preservation — on Saturday facing a Michigan front that recorded seven sacks last week and has 22 this season.

Clifford has four rushing touchdowns this season.

Our Pick: Penn State QB Sean Clifford anytime TD

Nicholas Singleton to score team’s first TD (+360)

Nicholas Singleton is averaging 7.3 yards a carry and has a team-leading five rushing touchdowns. The talented freshman hasn’t been a threat as a receiver — three catches, 11 yards — but consistently delivers big plays.

Singleton scored twice at Auburn and averaged 12.4 yards per carry in the game, facing a Tigers’ defense expected to produce multiple NFL players out of the front seven.

Our Pick: Singleton to score Penn State’s first TD
