The NFL season kicks off on Thursday when the Las Vegas Raiders meet the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

It’s always tough to find a betting angle in the first preseason game of the year because it’s basically a glorified scrimmage. New Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, however, may be more inclined to win this one.

If you’ve ever been to the HOF, you may have noticed a high school sits right next to Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. That high school is Canton McKinley and one of its most famous graduates is former quarterback Josh McDaniels.

Raiders vs. Jaguars Hall of Fame Game prediction

McDaniels grew up in Ohio and will likely have a large contingent of friends and family on hand to watch his debut with the Raiders. That doesn’t mean Las Vegas will win, but a guy might try harder to get a victory in a preseason game when he went to high school 100 feet away.

The other reason I’m backing Las Vegas here is that I’m really high on the Raiders this season. I bet them +700 to win the AFC West, 40/1 to win the Super Bowl, and I grabbed Derek Carr at 28/1 to win MVP. I believe they have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL.

The combination of McDaniels playing in the shadows of his former high school and the better overall roster is enough for me to grab Las Vegas in the preseason opener.
