It’s the most fun week of the NFL regular season — and in some ways the saddest. Having multiple games on at once, the last hour of that early window where half of the leads seem to change hands — those precious, sweaty moments won’t be there to enjoy every Sunday anymore. The playoffs are awesome, even more so with the extra wild-card games in the first round, but having one game on at a time is just not the same as the madness of Sundays September through December.
The final week should be a wild one. The playoff scenarios, especially in the AFC, are enough to make your head hurt. With the No. 2 seed no longer getting a bye and the Chiefs having clinched the top seed, more teams are likely to rest players in Week 17 than in past years, making this perhaps a more challenging week to handicap. Let’s get a head start on the madness.
Baltimore Ravens (-13) at Cincinnati Bengals: Since the COVID-19 outbreak that postponed their Thanksgiving matchup against Pittsburgh, Baltimore has been absolutely dominant. The Ravens are 4-0 straight up and against the spread, winning by an average margin of 15.5 points. The schedule has been soft, but that stretch includes a thrilling win against the Browns in which Lamar Jackson missed part of the game but came back to lead the winning drive. There’s also a 17-point win against the Cowboys that suddenly looks more impressive.
Up next is a Bengals team that the Ravens already handled 27-3 earlier this season with Joe Burrow at quarterback. The Colts’ loss to the Steelers on Sunday put the Ravens in control of their destiny, with only the lowly Bengals standing in their way. While too much is made of teams and players tanking, when teams that are out of it fall behind early in a game, they tend to roll over. The Ravens will not give the Bengals any reason to fantasize about playing spoiler. I expect them to get an early lead and to win this one going away.
Sam Darnold N.Y. Post: Charles WenzelbergNew York Jets (+3) at New England Patriots: Are we sure the right team is favored here? The Jets look like the equal or better team over the last month, as crazy as that is to say. That ridiculous blitz call against the Raiders is the only thing keeping the Jets from going for their fourth win in five games. Meanwhile, the Patriots have lost three in a row by an average of 20 points per game, culminating with an embarrassing 38-9 loss to the Bills on Monday night.
New England now has a short week to prepare for a Jets team that is locked into the second pick of the draft, with a quarterback in Sam Darnold who has gone on record saying he wants to stay with the franchise. Expect the Jets to play hard and be right in this game until the end, if not win it outright. The Patriots are certainly excused for a bad year (or a bad decade with how great they’ve been for so long), but they look like a bottom-five roster. Getting this team to 7-9 would be an accomplishment for Bill Belichick, as they simply lack talent on both sides of the ball. Take the points.
