Ravens vs. Bengals picks and analysis

The Bengals (2-2) have rebounded from their surprise 0-2 start by handling the New York Jets and outgunning the Miami Dolphins. Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins, and company looked back on top of their game in their Week 4 victory, which came on “Thursday Night Football,” giving Cincinnati extra time to rest and prepare for the Ravens.

Baltimore (2-2) has now dropped two games that it led by at least 17 points. After the Ravens’ Week 2 disaster against the Dolphins, they fell apart against the Buffalo Bills last Sunday despite leading 20-3 late in the first half. With the game tied in the fourth, John Harbaugh called for a throw to the end zone instead of a chip-shot field goal, and Lamar Jackson’s pass was intercepted. The Bills embarked on a game-winning drive from there. Jackson is producing like an MVP-caliber player, but he can’t coach and play defense, too.

Ravens to cover (-3.5)

The last time the Bengals visited Baltimore, Burrow and then-rookie Ja’Marr Chase had a true breakout game. Chase’s 82-yard catch-and-run touchdown highlighted Cincinnati’s 41-17 stomping of the Ravens.

The Bengals managed to win the AFC North with a 10-7 record after shellacking the Ravens again in the rematch, 41-21. Their magical run to Super Bowl LVI wouldn’t have happened without this series going the way it did.

Not only do the Ravens carry those memories with them, but they’re also off to an 0-2 start at home this year, with their heartbreaking losses to both the Dolphins and the Bills coming in Baltimore. There’s added pressure for the Ravens — as Ray Lewis used to say — to “protect this house.”

Cincinnati’s defense also has yet to face a quarterback as dynamic as Jackson, who’s both tied for the league lead in passing touchdowns (11) and ninth among all players in rushing yards (316). The Ravens are averaging nearly 30 points per game and aren’t going to shy away from the challenge of finally sticking it to their rivals.

Pick: Ravens to win (-3.5) @ -105 with Caesars Sportsbook.

Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase to gain over 70.5 receiving yards

Remember Chase? He eclipsed 70.5 yards on one play in last year’s game at Baltimore. That’s the punch this dynamo can pack.

In two games against the Ravens as a rookie, Chase averaged 163 receiving yards per game. He hauled in 15 catches with one touchdown.

Even in an offense that also features Higgins and Tyler Boyd in healthy doses, Chase has been targeted 41 times; Higgins is a distant second at 28. The main reason this over/under is set this low has to do with Chase’s production this year; he’s only eclipsed 70.5 yards twice in four games.

But bear in mind the Ravens’ difficulty stopping Miami’s dynamic duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle back in Week 2. They became the first receiving tandem in NFL history to record 170 receiving yards and two touchdowns apiece in the same game. It bodes well for Chase and his friends.

We also aren’t too worried about the Ravens getting to Burrow much in this game. They had to sign veteran pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul late last month due to multiple injuries at the position. And Cincinnati’s offensive line has looked better recently than it did against Pittsburgh and Dallas to start the season.

Pick: Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase to gain over 70.5 receiving yards @ -119 with Caesars Sportsbook.

Over 48 total points

Counting playoffs and the regular season, the under has hit in each of the Bengals’ last nine games, an anomaly for a team known for its dangerous, Burrow-led offense.

The Bengals hit a major snag at the start of this season when their offensive line, which was supposed to be improved, appeared even worse than last year. Burrow was sacked 13 times in his first two games but just three times in Cincinnati’s two-game winning streak since then, letting Burrow go to work.

More importantly, the offenses come out to play when the Bengals face the Ravens. The over is 6-3 in the past nine installments of this series.

Between that and the Ravens’ offense tending to score in bunches, we’re confident that Cincinnati’s “under” streak is due to end.

Pick: Over 48 points scored @ -110 with Caesars Sportsbook.
