The Giants enter their home series against the Cardinals with a 39-47 record, but appear to be playing their best baseball of the season.

San Francisco has won five of its past six games while an offense that is in the bottom three in runs per game and batting average has scored six-plus runs in every one of those wins.

In the series opener (10:15 p.m.), San Francisco starts Drew Pomeranz, who is 2-8 with a 6.25 ERA, but has been good at home recently. He has pitched five innings in each of his past three home starts, not giving up a single run in any of them. For the season, his home ERA is a 3.53 compared to 9.76 on the road. He gets 3.3 strikeouts per nine innings more at home and is allowing one home run per nine innings compared to over 3.6 on the road.

He is also backed up by a bullpen that ranks fifth in the MLB in ERA while the Cardinals come in at seventh, but are without their closer Jordan Hicks because of injury.

The Cardinals were also without a lot of offense in June, posting the second-fewest runs in the MLB for the month with just less than 3.3 per game. This means starter Dakota Hudson needs to deliver a strong outing. He’s been solid with a 6-4 record and a 3.40 ERA, but regression might be coming.

Hudson gets nearly two more ground balls per every fly ball than any of the other 80-plus qualified starting pitchers in the MLB and has a fielding independent metric of 4.98, meaning with factors under his control, his ERA should be much higher than it is.

With the Giants playing their best baseball of the year and the Cardinals struggling on offense without slugger Marcell Ozuna, this is a great opportunity to take a plus-money price with a home underdog.
