It has not been the best of seasons for the offenses of the Detroit Tigers and Miami Marlins, and these teams will not catch a break with Tuesday’s pitching matchup.
Caleb Smith and Spencer Turnbull both rank in the top seven in ERA among qualified pitchers and face the two worst offenses in MLB. The Tigers as a collective are plating 3.3 runs per game while the Marlins a paltry 2.7, no other team in the league is averaging fewer than 3.7.
With both pitchers also striking out more than nine batters per nine innings and in the case of Smith a league-best 12 strikeouts per nine innings, it will limit the amount of errors the guys around them can make and could allow both to go longer in the game. This is paramount as both teams rank in the bottom five of the majors in bullpen ERA.
With these pitchers combining for 12 Unders in their 17 starts this year and these two teams also ranking 29th and 30th in the league by a wide margin in terms of total home runs hit, expect a low-scoring contest.
The Play: Tigers-Marlins Under 7¹/₂ runs.
