When Tigers pitcher Matthew Boyd takes the mound Thursday night against the Rangers, he will be at home in Comerica Park but his best thoughts may be far away.

The pitcher and his wife, Ashley, announced that they have opened a children’s home in the African nation of Uganda and are launching a foundation to provide rescue efforts for girls.

The goodwill should continue for the lefty Boyd (3-1 at home with a 2.61 ERA and a .184 avg. against) when the Tigers open a four-game series with the Rangers against right-hander Yovani Gallardo.

In his past two starts, Gallardo gave up seven runs in 12 ²/₃ innings, though he ended up with two wins (vs. the Twins and White Sox). But he won’t be able to keep up with the Tigers.
