Wofford went on the road Sunday and pulled off a stunning upset of North Carolina at the Dean Dome as a double-digit underdog. On Thursday, the Terriers go for the colossal Tobacco Road sweep at Duke.
Wofford was a Top 25 team last season and very nearly slayed Kentucky in the NCAA regional semifinals, but expectations were tempered after coach Mike Young left for Virginia Tech and two of the team’s top four scorers graduated.
The Terriers’ hallmark last season was 3-point shooting and offensive efficiency, which is still the case this season. Wofford ranks 26th in the country in both 3-point and free-throw shooting percentage and is 24th in the country in points per possession.
Duke will look to push the pace, as the Blue Devils rank 22nd in most possessions per game while Wofford rates 348th out of 353 schools. Duke also will be without Cassius Stanley, who was shooting better than 40 percent from 3-point range.
Wofford has relished true road games, covering 10 of its 14 since Christmas 2018. Duke is 4-10 against the spread in its last 14 games as a favorite of at least 10 points dating back to February 2018. Both trends should continue with this scrappy bunch of Terriers looking for another signature win.
The play: Wofford, +19¹/₂.
