THE future of “The X-Files” is shrouded in mystery – again.

Late yesterday, Chris Carter – the show’s creator and guiding light – had not agreed to re-sign with the network that carries “X-Files,” Fox.

Fox is slated to announce its fall schedule later today.

Until the latest snag, it had been expected that the popular sci-fi series would be back for another season on Sunday night.

But the inability to sign Carter has thrown a monkey wrench into those plans – at least temporarily.

Re-signing Carter has been a cliffhanger for the last two seasons, but sources close to the talks said they expected the show to return.
