After just six episodes, “Animal Practice” — a sitcom The Post told readers sported “Hollywood’s hottest star,” a comic monkey — was abruptly canceled yesterday.

The show was being watched by fewer than 4 million viewers — a disaster by network-TV standards — when NBC decided yesterday to pull the plug.

In July, The Post ran a lavish feature story on the comedy starring Justin Kirk, about a down-and-out animal hospital, predicting big things.

“A month before the new fall season shows start,” the paper wrote, “Crystal, a capuchin monkey, already is the breakout star.”

But yesterday, Crystal and the rest of the cast were told the last episode will air Nov. 7.
