BRAFF LAFFER’S LIMBO
NBC appears to be trying to keep its medical comedy “Scrubs” from airing another season – on rival ABC.
The critically acclaimed sitcom, which stars Zach Braff, has yet to be picked up by NBC for what was expected to be its seventh and final season.
“Scrubs” is produced by ABC Studios, ABC’s sister studio – and was initially developed by ABC boss Stephen McPherson before he took over the network.
Reports surfaced late Thursday that the show was on the verge of shifting from NBC to ABC.
But NBC co-chairman Marc Graboff said in a statement yesterday that the network still has “exclusive” rights to keep the show – and that if ABC Studios negotiated with ABC it could be in breach of contract.
Comedy Central may also have made an informal bid for new episodes of “Scrubs,” though high production costs would likely preclude a deal.
“Scrubs” completed 12 episodes of what was to be its final season before the writers’ strike. Seven episodes have already aired, and the remaining five are set to run starting April 10.
