DOUBLE YOUR FUN
PUZZLEHEAD [***] (Three stars)
A witty mix of “Frankenstein” and David Lynch’s “Eraserhead” – with a tip of the hat to Hitchcock’s “Saboteur” – “Puzzlehead” is an indie delight.
We’re in, according to the press notes, “a world of no-place” (actually Brooklyn) where mad scientist Walter creates an android, named Puzzlehead, in his own likeness. (Stephen Galaida plays both parts.)
They settle into a Holmes-Watson domestic life – one puffing on his pipe, the other playing Bach on the harpsichord.
Just as Frankenstein’s monster turned on his creator, Puzzlehead grows weary of Walter. We know there’s trouble ahead when Puzzlehead asks Walter to ditch the Bach and play Scarlatti.
One reason for the bad feelings is their competing lust for Julia (Robbie Shapiro), the sad-looking young woman who works behind the counter at the local deli.
“Puzzlehead” was made on a shoestring by James Bai, an accountant turned Columbia film school grad. The clever script is accompanied by rich cinematography by Jeffrey Lando. The framing and lighting belie the film’s lack of funds. We await Bai’s next film, “The Complete History of Me.”
Running time: 81 minutes. Not rated (mature themes). At the Two Boots Pioneer Theater, Avenue A and Third Street.
