FOX Broadcasting said Thursday that it had renewed “The Simpsons” for a 23rd season, allowing the celebrated, long-running animated sitcom to air more than 500 episodes.

By the end of the 2011-2012 season, “The Simpsons” will have aired 515 episodes.

Created by cartoonist Matt Groening, the series made its debut on January 14, 1990.
