Jessica Simpson could be the next “American Idol” judge.

The singer and reality-TV star has been approached about filling the seat vacated by Simon Cowell on the upcoming season of the singing competition series, Simpson sources told todayshow.com.

Both sides have only talked so far and have not entered the negotiation stage yet.

Simpson is one of many pop star names being bandied about as potential new judges.

Elton John’s and Justin Timberlake’s representatives denied recent reports that they were in talks to fill the empty seat. Still said to be in the running are Harry Connick Jr. and Chris Isaak.

Fox hopes to have a new judge in place by late August, when “Idol” hopefuls traditionally audition before the judges.
