KEEPING DAN’S SEAT WARM
BOB Schieffer, CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent, will temporarily anchor the network’s daily “Evening News” telecast after Dan Rather steps down next month.
Schieffer, a 30-year CBS News veteran, will continue to anchor his Sunday public affairs show, “Face the Nation,” from Washington while anchoring the “Evening News” from New York.
Between the two shows, Schieffer, a 67-year-old cancer survivor, will work nearly seven days a week.
“We are not giving out a timetable,” a CBS News spokeswoman said yesterday as to how long Schieffer will maintain the grueling schedule.
Rather is stepping down from “Evening News” on March 9, in the wake of the “60 Minutes Wednesday” edition memogate scandal.
