Although they’re each happily married in real life, both Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl have spent the majority of their acting careers playing single characters. This weekend, they join forces as a suburban married couple whose domestic bliss is interrupted by Heigl’s character’s realization that her husband is a trained assassin, and himself the target of a hit. Before you see how well Kutcher and Heigl work as cinematic soulmates, take a look back at the men and women who came close to capturing their fictional hearts. AP

Both Kutcher and Heigl got their start on TV, but while Kutcher’s been romancing the likes of Cameron Diaz and Amanda Peet in movies for years, Heigl was, until recently, busy looking for love while learning how to be a doctor on “Grey’s Anatomy.” After being briefly engaged to heart-transplant patient Denny Duquette, she later married her one-time nemesis, Alex Karev, whom she’s kissing in the still above, but that relationship fell apart before Heigl’s unceremonious departure from the show earlier this year. Truthfully, Kutcher hasn’t always played the single guy. In 2003, he took the big-screen plunge, playing husband to his then real-life girlfriend, the late Brittany Murphy. In the film, Kutcher and Murphy’s Tom and Sarah marry after only a few months together and then suffer a disastrous honeymoon in Europe (a scene from which is shown above), during which they break up. But, as is often the case in romantic comedies, things ultimately work out for the central couple. 20th Century Fox

In “Guess Who,” a race-reversing remake of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?,” Kutcher tried to win over the family of his black girlfriend, played by future “Avatar” star Zoe Saldana, including her hard-to-please father, played by Bernie Mac. Claudette Barius

Heigl may not have played a wife on the big screen before this weekend, but she did get her big break playing an expectant mom in Judd Apatow’s smash hit “Knocked Up.” As E! News reporter Alison, Heigl’s character’s one-night stand with Seth Rogen’s slacker Ben, results in a baby and a couple hours of hilarity as the two grow closer over the course of her pregnancy. In “A Lot Like Love,” Kutcher starred opposite Amanda Peet as two twentysomething singles who slowly fall in love through numerous, brief interactions over the course of several years.

Heigl has also walked down the aisle, or at least her character in “27 Dresses” did, 27 times as the “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” protagonist in this 2008 film in which Heigl’s Jane wrestles with her feelings for a cynical writer played by James Marsden and her boss, George, who’s marrying her younger sister. 20th Century Fox

Kutcher took the plunge again in 2008’s “What Happens in Vegas,” accidentally marrying Cameron Diaz after a drunken night in Sin City. Complicating matters, during their night of debauchery, the newlyweds won the jackpot, leading each of them to spend the rest of the movie trying to do away with the marriage and keep all of the money. Ah, romance…

Last summer, Heigl continued to cement her place as a bankable leading lady by starring in the commercially-successful but critically-panned romantic comedy “The Ugly Truth.” Playing a morning-show producer who follows the advice of her crass contributor to help land the man of her dreams, it’s pretty obvious, including from the photo above, who Heigl’s character ultimately ends up with. Most recently, Kutcher played a florist in the massive-ensemble romantic comedy, “Valentine’s Day.” As would be expected in a film about the intersecting lives of several L.A. singles, both Kutcher and his character’s longtime friend, played by his “Dude Where’s My Car?” co-star Jennifer Garner, each begin the film in love with one person and end it starting a relationship with someone else. — By HILARY LEWIS Marcos Vasquez/BuzzFoto.com
