HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The popular penguins from DreamWorks’ animated “Madagascar” series will star in their own feature film in 2012, The Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday.

The movie, whose title has not yet been announced, will be scripted by “Megamind” writers Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons.

The four penguins — Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico — were supporting characters in the first two “Madagascar” movies, and will appear in the franchise’s third movie, also planned for release in 2012.

They appeared in an animated short on the Blu-ray release of the first “Madagascar,” and star in their own animated series on Nickelodeon, currently in its second season.

No director or release date has been announced for the movie.
