ON her 2005 comeback disc, “I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise,” Detroit soul singer Bettye LaVette (left) took some songs famously sung by other female artists, such as Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton and Fiona Apple, and injected them with a passion and reworked them top to bottom to make them all her powerful and emotional own.

The 50-year-old artist performs at Damrosch Park (Broadway at 63rd Street; [212] 7216500; Lincolncenter.org ) to headline the “American Blues Raises the Roof” festival, which is part of Lincoln Center Out of Doors 2006, which runs through Aug. 27. It’s a free, not-tomiss event, which also features a night full of distinguished blues, jazz and folk artists: Guy Davis, Chico Hamilton and Buster Williams, Murray Porter and Hazel Dickens.
