‘MILLIONAIRE’ SCORES BIG
WHO Wants to Be a Millionaire?” is a show that everybody wants to watch, it seems.
The game show hosted by Regis Philbin – which ends its 13-day run Sunday – placed four shows in the top 10 TV shows of last week.
The show – which has run nearly every night for two weeks – scored on Sunday (No. 1), Wednesday (No. 9) , Thursday (No. 5) and Friday (No. 2), in terms of total viewers.
The show is a summer replacement, but its phenomonal ratings insure that ABC will bring it back later this season – perhaps as soon as November.
Based on Britain’s hugely popular TV quiz show of the same name, “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?” is a throwback to the prime-time “isolation booth” quiz shows of the ’50s, where loot was the true star.
So far the game has given away the largest primetime TV gameshow jackpot in history – $250,000 – to West Virginia Fiddler, Doug Van Gundy.
