LONDON — J. K. Rowling’s latest project, “Pottermore,” remains shrouded in secrecy but a memo mistakenly leaked Wednesday hints that it involves a real-life treasure hunt linked to an online game.

Harry Potter fans have been scrambling to find out more about a mysterious “Pottermore” website after it appeared earlier in June. The site has a burgundy background and features two watchful owls perched between the scrawled message “Coming Soon.”

But new details have emerged, allegedly released by mistake, in a memo sent by a party involved with the official “Pottermore” launch event Thursday in London, the Times of London said.

The document details the marketing strategy for the project, and suggests it is a sophisticated online game that contains clues to prizes, which are an unstated number of magic wands hidden in Britain and US and possibly other countries.

It is not clear, however, whether the treasure hunt is “Pottermore” itself, or merely a marketing drive for another product. Stonehill Salt, one of three public relations companies involved, has said only that the project “is not a new book.”

Rowling, who will make an announcement at the Victoria and Albert Museum in southwest London Thursday, has previously said that the seventh Harry Potter book would be the last in the series.
