Gore fests aren’t for everyone. Here are some milder monster flicks, all of them on DVD:

“Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” (1948): The famous comedy team (pictured) encounters the monster, as well as Dracula (Bela Lugosi) and the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.), in this classic black-and-white blend of slapstick and shudders.

“King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962): For those who find the originals too intense, this two-for-the-price-of-one sequel, set in Tokyo, is a lot of fun.

“Mad Monster Party” (1967): Wee ones and their nostalgic parents will get a kick out of this cute stop-motion musical cartoon, which features Dr. Frankenstein (voiced by Boris Karloff) playing host to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Mummy, the Invisible Man and more.

“Gremlins” (1984): Not particularly violent or gory, and with especially cute and mischievous monsters. Just be prepared to explain what happens when one of them ends up in a microwave.

“Something Wicked This Way Comes” (1983): One of Disney’s most underrated live-action pictures, this Ray Bradbury fantasy stars Jonathan Pryce as the head of a traveling circus who helps people realize their fantasies — at a cost.

“The Monster Squad” (1987): Pitched at slightly older kids, this live-action charmer focuses on a group of young horror fans who meet yet another platoon of monsters, including the Creature From the Black Lagoon.
