Sarah Palin evened the score with Katie Couric this week.

NBC’s “Today” show, featuring guest-host Palin, beat the Couric-hosted “Good Morning America” in total viewers Tuesday in the shows’ much-hyped battle of morning stars.

“Today” averaged 5.5 million viewers to “GMA’s” 5.1 million viewers, according to early Nielsen estimates. “Today” also beat “GMA” in the coveted morning-show demo of viewers 25 to 54.

No matter who won, the showdown succeeded in bringing some heat to a.m. TV.

“It wasn’t just a coincidence that I was on this morning up against some competition down the plaza,” Palin told Fox News. “I’m not sure how it all came together, but I am one for good competition.”

It’s Couric’s first morning-show gig since leaving “Today” in 2006 before her five-year run anchoring the “CBS Evening News.”

Palin infamously flubbed an interview with Couric during the 2008 presidential campaign.
