THE QUEEN (2006)
Thursday, 2 a.m., USA
Helen Mirren won an Oscar for her performance as the stiffly, out-of-touch Queen Elizabeth following the death of Princess Diana. Her lack of understanding of the depth of feeling that the British people felt for Diana stands in stark and destructive contrast to Elizabeth’s chilliness about her feeling that a full-out public funeral would be, well, terribly, terribly distasteful. With James Cromwell.
8 MILE (2002)
Monday, 3:40 p.m., Starz
The always provocative Eminem stars as a white rapper out of Detroit’s 8 Mile, a dividing line between the crumbling mess of the inner city and the suburbs beyond. As he tries to make it in the all-black medium, he also breaks up with his girlfriend (Brittany Murphy) and moves in with his sexed-up boozer of a mother, played by Kim Basinger.
GEORGY GIRL (1966)
Sunday, 10 a.m., TCM
One of the defining movies of the decade for baby boomers centers on 22-year old, chubby virginal Georgy (Lynn Redgrave) who, nonetheless, has two men lusting after her. One is her father’s rich, middle-aged boss (James Mason) and the other is the father of her selfish roommate’s baby (Alan Bates). Four Oscar nominations, including one for Redgrave and one for Mason.
THE LONGEST YARD (1974)
Sunday, 1:07 a.m., SPIKE
Forget the remake, and stick with the hilarious original about a washed-up pro-quarterback (Burt Reynolds, right) who lands in prison. The warden asks him to put together a team of cons who will play against the championship prison guards. All’s well until the warden asks him to throw the game — or else. Hilarious from start to bone-breaking finish. Reynolds at his bad boy funniest.
