Quick-change artist Meryl Streep transforms herself into butter-friendly chef Julia Child in this popular Nora Ephron comedy about an amateur chef (Amy Adams) who prepares Child’s recipes for a blog. Present-day scenes contrast with flashblacks of Child’s years in Paris, where she perfected her craft. Streep inexplicably lost the Best Actress Oscar to Sandra Bullock.
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, 2009
Sunday, 8 p.m., FX
Bigger-budget remake of the excellent Walter Matthau movie about a hijacked NYC subway train. Denzel Washington stars as a dispatcher who uses his knowledge of the underground maze of tunnels and tracks to thwart a homicidal maniac who has taken commuters hostage. With John Travolta.
My Best Friend’s Wedding, 1997
Monday, 1:10 p.m., Encore
Blockbuster rom-com about a bitchy food critic (Julia Roberts) who falls for her engaged best friend (Dermot Mulroney) and connives to steal him from his future bride (Cameron Diaz). Roberts works her three tricks — the hair, the honking laugh and the ear-to-ear grin — to their usual effect, but has a hard time keeping up with Rupert Everett, who steals the entire movie as her even bitchier gay best friend.
The Ice Storm, 1997
Wednesday, 3:30 p.m., IFC
Ang Lee, an Oscar winner for ”Brokeback Mountain,” casts a cold eye on soulless suburbanites but doesn’t quite tell us how they got that way in this much-admired movie that’s based on a novel by Rick Moody. Wife-swapping Kevin Kline has sex with Sigourney Weaver. When he pours out his angst-ridden heart to her, she gets bored and leaves him — in bed! Joan Allen plays a robot-like mother and Christina Ricci, who’ll be on “Pan Am” this fall on ABC, plays one of the emotionally neglected children in this film. With Elijah Wood and Jamey Sheridan.
