THE LONGEST YARD (1974)

Sunday, 10 p.m., ESPN

Burt Reynolds at his funniest and most gorgeous in this classic comedy about a former quarterback-turned-current convict, who, at the “request” of the sadistic warden (Eddie Albert), puts together a team of cons to play the guards. In exchange for an early release he’s told to throw the game, but his feminine side worries about cons’ self-esteem. Hilarious.

THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND (2006)

Tuesday, 10 p.m., HBO2

Forest Whitaker won the Best Actor Oscar for his astounding portrayal of Uganda’s brutal President Idi Amin in this story about an idealistic young Scottish doctor, Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), who comes to Uganda to work in a poor, rural hospital after the coup. Then things go from good to horribly, horribly bad. Good turn by Gillian Anderson, too. Brilliant.

HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART 1 (1981)

Thursday, 10 p.m., AMC

Mel Brooks’ very funny and very abbreviated world history includes the always-popular Spanish Inquisition, the Last Supper, the French Revolution and of course, how Moses hammered out the Ten Commandments. Not for the PC crowd: Everyone must get stoned here including Christians, Jews, Gays – you name it.

ABOUT A BOY (2002)

Saturday, 8 p.m., Bravo

A wonderfully offbeat little gem about a British hipster bachelor (Hugh Grant) who figures out a great way to meet “responsible” and hungry women – pretend to be a single dad and join a Parents-Without-Partners group. His plan falls apart when he meets misfit Marcus (Nicholas Hoult), who likes singing 1970’s songs, and his equally quirky mom (Toni Collette).
