REGIS Philbin snapped his Lucci-like losing streak last night with an unprecedented one-two punch of Daytime Emmys – for game show host and talk show host.
In accepting the first award, for his duties on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” Philbin joked about his previous 11 losses.
“This is proof that if you wait around long enough, you get one of these,” he said. “This is for everyone who never won anything in their lives.”
After he snagged his second statuette, for “Live with Regis & Kelly” – in a tie with Rosie O’Donnell – Philbin seemed bowled over.
“All these years and now two in one night!” the TV veteran marveled.
Philbin appeared on the telecast via satellite from Atlantic City, where he was doing a show with “All My Children” star Susan Lucci – who had an infamous 18-year losing streak until 1999 and lost again last night.
It was guaranteed Philbin wouldn’t go home empty-handed – when “Millionaire” won for Best Game Show, producer Michael Davies promised the host his trophy if he didn’t get one of his own.
The live NBC broadcast from Radio City Music Hall was hosted by Philbin’s former sidekick, Kathie Lee Gifford, who poked fun at herself when she congratulated him.
“We finally know what the problem was all these years – you had to get rid of me,” she laughed.
All night, Gifford peppered the show with jokes about her departure from “Live” and her replacement by soap star Kelly Ripa.
“Hey, Kath, you look terrific,” Regis told Gifford via satellite.
She replied: “Regis, you never looked better. It must be that Ripa girl.”
The show also featured a video montage that showed Gifford getting into a taxi with a buckle-up message from Regis and Ripa and scenes of her throwing a tantrum while watching her successor on TV.
Another big winner of the night was O’Donnell. In addition to her tie with Philbin, her ABC show also won for Best Talk Show for the fourth year.
In the soap categories, shows taped in the Big Apple took key awards, with “As the World Turns” winning Best Drama Series and Best Writing Team.
David Canary of “All My Children” was named Best Lead Actor, and Martha Byrne of “As the World Turns” was picked Best Lead Actress.
“The Bold and the Beautiful” stars Adrienne Frantz and Justin Torkildsen picked up awards for Best Younger Actor and Actress.
Lesli Kay of “As the World Turns”, who took Best Supporting Actress honors, paid tribute to her father. “You told me I should act instead of becoming a doctor and I think it’s worked out all right,” Kay said.
