Disney has extinguished Cartoon Network’s lightsaber.

Just a little over three months after acquiring “Star Wars” studio Lucasfilm, Disney has dropped the ax on Cartoon Network’s popular animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which aired for five seasons.

Disney announced this news, and the “postponement” of Cartoon Network’s unaired series, “Star Wars: Detours,” in a message posted on starwars.com.

Disney says it will include unseen “bonus content” from “The Clone Wars” on another, unspecified media platform.

Starwars.com also included a video message from series director Dave Filoni. “I love making this show, and even though it’s winding down, it’s not over yet,” he says.

Left unsaid is that Disney’s “whole new ‘Star Wars’ series” — also announced on starwars.com — will likely air on one of its own networks such as Disney XD — since Cartoon Network is owned by rival Turner Broadcasting.
