Starr report
Today’s episode of “The Doctors” (9 a.m./Ch. 2) covers two topics both very much in the news right now.
Magic Johnson, who’s been HIV-positive for 19 years, visits the show to discuss what it’s been like to live with the disease — and to talk about the breakthroughs that have been made in battling AIDS. Johnson also shoots some hoops with co-host Dr. Travis Stork to benefit The Magic Johnson Foundation in recognition of World AIDS Day (Dec. 1).
Today’s show also covers the “Halt the Salt” health movement designed to raise awarness to improve heart health (by getting people to consume a lower sodium diet).
The Johnson segment, in particular, is extremely timely. Just this week, it was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that a single daily pill, containing two HIV drugs, can reduce the risk of contracting the HIV virus by an average of 44 percent (and by over 70 percent if the subjects take most of their pills). The study involved nearly 2,500 “high-risk gay men.”
And the “Halt the Salt” movement has a local tie, since Mayor Bloomberg and New York City health officials have been pushing for lower sodium in packaged and restaurant foods for nearly a year now.
