MR. RICE’S SECRET

THIS is an earnest, well-meaning film about a mysterious, centuries-old William Rice – played by none other than David Bowie – who befriends a 12-year-old boy (Bill Switzer) suffering from cancer, helping him cope with his fear of death.

Unfortunately, the narrative for this Canadian indie (originally called “Exhuming Mr. Rice”) depends almost entirely on implausible plot twists and some unanswered questions, such as why Rice suddenly dies after being kept alive for 395 years by a glowing, blue elixir.

If you’re in the mood for a centuries-old Bowie, check out the 1983 vampire flick “The Hunger” instead.

Running time: 93 minutes. Not rated. At the Two Boots Pioneer Theater, East Third Street, at Avenue A.
