THE Working Theater, which last brought us “Tabletop,” Rob Ackerman’s splendid look at the technicians who make commercials, is back with another take on working people – a savage comedy about four secretaries about to be downsized.
In Annie Weisman’s “Hold Please,” directed by Connie Grappo, we meet the four as they gather for a session about workplace harassment.
Grace, a 50-ish woman played with crisp decision by Kathryn Rossetter, is running the show – and she’s determined to ruin one executive’s career.
Her ally is Agatha (Laura Esterman), who seems sympathetic, while the younger two are uninterested in Grace’s agenda.
Jessica (Jeanine Serralles) is a chatty flibbertigibbet who’s also the favorite of the women’s new female boss; mousy and ill-dressed Erika (Emma Bowers) may be pregnant by one of the executives.
Just which woman will survive the downsizing?
The answer is surprising; the play is fun.
